Fire extinguishers require annual servicing to ensure that they are in good working condition and are compliant with fire safety regulations. This annual service is also crucial if your business has expanded or the layout of your premises has changed, as our professional fire extinguisher engineers can recommend additional measures to ensure your space is properly protected.

In most office environments, water fire extinguishers and CO2 fire extinguishers are often sufficient. However, if your premises uses flammable liquids or gases, additional types of fire extinguishers may be required. The fire risk assessment report should accurately document the quantity, type, and specific location of each fire extinguisher that is in accordance with regulations and installed within the premises, along with the most recent date of service.

The types of fire extinguishers include:

Water Extinguishers (Class A)

These are marked with a red label and are suitable for Class A fires, which involve solid combustibles like wood, paper, fabric, and plastics. Water extinguishers are not suitable for use on flammable liquid fires or electrical fires due to the risk of electrical conductivity.

Foam Extinguishers (Class A and B)

Foam extinguishers are marked with a cream label and are effective against Class A fires (solid materials) and Class B fires (flammable liquids like petrol or oil). They form a cooling blanket over the fire to suppress it.

Powder Extinguishers (Class A, B, and C)

Powder extinguishers, with a blue label, are versatile and can be used on Class A (solid materials), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class C (flammable gases) fires. They are also effective for electrical fires. However, they can create reduced visibility and can cause inhalation issues.

CO2 Extinguishers (Class B and Electrical)

CO2 (carbon dioxide) extinguishers are designed for use on Class B fires (flammable liquids) and electrical fires. They leave no residue and are safe for use on electrical equipment. They have a black label.

Wet Chemical Extinguishers (Class F)

Wet chemical extinguishers have a yellow label and are suitable for kitchen fires involving cooking oils, fats, and grease (Class F fires). They work by cooling and suppressing the fire, making them particularly effective for deep fat fryer fires.

Class D (Metal) Extinguishers

These are designed for fires involving combustible metals, such as magnesium, sodium, and lithium. They use a special dry powder and have a blue label with a white stripe.

Water Mist Extinguishers

Water mist extinguishers, marked with a white label, are suitable for Class A and Class F fires. They work by cooling the fire and creating a mist to suppress the flames.

Class M Extinguishers (Marine Use)

Class M extinguishers are designed for marine environments and are used on various types of fires, including Class A, B, C, D, and electrical fires. They often feature a red label.
